The Power Peel ®

®
It’s
a mouthful to say, but this exciting, new, painless, safe six-syllable
word can greatly increase your score on the happiness meter in less
than one short hour. The word is microdermabrasion.
After
being effectively used in Europe for over ten years, the mechanical
microdermabrasion machine recently received FDA approval for use in
the United States.
Initially
developed in Italy, the treatment consists of a jet of delicate,
sand-like crystals directed through a small tube and vacuumed across
the skin to remove dead and damaged skin cells. Fine lines, wrinkles,
brown spots, acne scars, blackheads, enlarged pores and broken
capillaries are some targets of microdermabrasion. Even
“permanent” makeup can be removed with this innovative technique
when bleaching and pre-treatments are used.
The
Power Behind The Peel
Technically
speaking, microdermabrasion regenerates the epidermal cell structure,
stimulating collagen production. After just one procedure, clients
enjoy a noticeable difference in the skin. Repeated treatments
significantly soften wrinkles, age spots, acne scars and other
problems, promoting smooth, soft, vibrant-looking skin that both looks
and feels more youthful.
Treatments
are typically short, being completed in 15-45 minutes. No pre-treatment or topical anesthesia is required, however
careful follow-up ensures optimal results and satisfaction.
Your aesthetician will consult with you before and after
each treatment to answer questions and advise
you on how to get the most benefit from your power peel by
keeping the treated area clean, moisturized and protected with a
sunscreen of SPF of 15 or 30.
Since
microdermabrasion is so new, esthetician
are trained to
provide complete information to clients in search of the best
treatment for their particular skin concerns.
In
the past, clinical peels including laser skin resurfacing, chemical
peels and dermabrasion were common treatments, but both have
drawbacks. Compared to microdermabrasion, they can be painful and also
require longer recovery downtime.
Microdermabrasion, on the other hand, has been proven safe and
effective for all kinds of skin—gentle enough for the chest and neck
and for all ethnicities. There
is little discomfort when the crystals are vacuumed over the face.
It feels like a light sanding, and when finished, it’s like
you’ve been to the beach for the day.
Although
it is non-invasive, microdermabrasion should not be approached without
caution, especially in regard to the provider.
To
avoid possible pain and damage, do not undertake this clinical
treatment without first determining the qualifications of the
esthetician
and the center. Don’t be afraid to ask hard questions,
making sure the clinician is a qualified practitioner. Find out how
long the
esthetician has been in the industry, and, importantly, how
familiar she is with the machine. Once you determine that your esthetician
is a licensed esthetician who has logged several hours on
the machine specializing in the procedure, you will have the
reassurance of putting your face in the best hands.
